Kili Climb, July 2006

Ewan and Ruth. Do they look like they fully understand whats about to happen? Day 1: Rain Forest. Walk to Lemosho Forest camp Mess tent. It will be some time before I want to see porridge again More forest than rain. Mount Meru in the background Day 2: Giant Heather. Nice 6 hour stroll to Shira 1 camp. At 11k feet, we start to realize this could be serious Day 2: Heather thins out. Scrub and brush shrink as we start to notice a bit of a hill in the background Day 2: Shira Plateau Day 3: Makeke & Mussa get ready to go. These guys are going to keep us alive??? 7 hours from Shira1 to Barranco Valley Camp, including lunch at the lava tube (15k ft) Day 3: turning decidedly to desert. dust everywhere Day 3: it's coming right for us! Day 3: a view from Barranco Valley camp. Starting to see lots more lava Day 4: The Barranco (breakfast) wall. Climbing up in a line with 100 of my closest friends. Kissing rock doesn't kiss back very well. Day 5: at Barafu camp...ready to go a view from above Barafu camp. 15k feet high. Notice how close to the cliffs the outhouses are...damn diamox! Day 6: After a midnight start, we hit the summit at 6am. Lou now hates his watch for misleading him. Freezing temps, unreal winds, mild hallucinations (wishful thinking), and a "Makeke you freak!" later, we are at 20k feet! Day 6: Sunrise over the crater, filled in with fog... Day 6: Summit ice wall. 100 ft high and goes on forever! Day 6: Mount Meru in the backdrop Day 6: we need to come down the same scree we went up. I'm starting to hate scree going down even more. Ruth developes a new guidance system for rocks and plays "bowling for Ewan" Day 6: scree. A lot easier when you stop moving! Day 6: from Barafu to Mweka camp. More dust...great. Dust now in places that should never experience dust. Day 6: looking at the 3 peaks from Mweka Day 6: Glacier to the left...we circled and climbed the peaks to the right. Day 7: forced singing Day 7: Mweka camp. The crew that saw us through. Day 8: Back at Kigongoni Lodge. After a long night celebrating, time for bed. Lou suddenly realizes he's in trouble as he looks for room 16
