Kili Climb, July 2006

Ewan and Ruth. Do they look like they fully understand whats about to happen?
imgp0016.jpg
Day 1: Rain Forest. Walk to Lemosho Forest camp
imgp0018.jpg
Mess tent. It will be some time before I want to see porridge again
imgp0019.jpg
More forest than rain. Mount Meru in the background
imgp0021.jpg
Day 2: Giant Heather. Nice 6 hour stroll to Shira 1 camp. At 11k feet, we start to realize this could be serious
imgp0024.jpg
Day 2: Heather thins out. Scrub and brush shrink as we start to notice a bit of a hill in the background
imgp0026.jpg
Day 2: Shira Plateau
imgp0027.jpg
Day 3: Makeke & Mussa get ready to go. These guys are going to keep us alive??? 7 hours from Shira1 to Barranco Valley Camp, including lunch at the lava tube (15k ft)
imgp0028.jpg
Day 3: turning decidedly to desert. dust everywhere
imgp0030.jpg
Day 3: it's coming right for us!
imgp0031.jpg
Day 3: a view from Barranco Valley camp. Starting to see lots more lava
imgp0033.jpg
Day 4: The Barranco (breakfast) wall. Climbing up in a line with 100 of my closest friends. Kissing rock doesn't kiss back very well.
imgp0034.jpg
Day 5: at Barafu camp...ready to go
imgp0048.jpg
a view from above Barafu camp. 15k feet high. Notice how close to the cliffs the outhouses are...damn diamox!
imgp0036.jpg
Day 6: After a midnight start, we hit the summit at 6am. Lou now hates his watch for misleading him. Freezing temps, unreal winds, mild hallucinations (wishful thinking), and a "Makeke you freak!" later, we are at 20k feet!
imgp0039.jpg
Day 6: Sunrise over the crater, filled in with fog...
imgp0041.jpg
Day 6: Summit ice wall. 100 ft high and goes on forever!
imgp0042.jpg
Day 6: Mount Meru in the backdrop
imgp0045.jpg
Day 6: we need to come down the same scree we went up. I'm starting to hate scree going down even more. Ruth developes a new guidance system for rocks and plays "bowling for Ewan"
imgp0046.jpg
Day 6: scree. A lot easier when you stop moving!
imgp0047.jpg
Day 6: from Barafu to Mweka camp. More dust...great. Dust now in places that should never experience dust.
imgp0050.jpg
Day 6: looking at the 3 peaks from Mweka
imgp0052.jpg
Day 6: Glacier to the left...we circled and climbed the peaks to the right.
imgp0053.jpg
Day 7: forced singing
imgp0054.jpg
Day 7: Mweka camp. The crew that saw us through.
imgp0055.jpg
Day 8: Back at Kigongoni Lodge. After a long night celebrating, time for bed. Lou suddenly realizes he's in trouble as he looks for room 16
